The appeal of an adorable little bunny rabbit diminishes slightly when that rabbit is blown up to ten times its normal weight. Karl Szmolinsky breeds German Gray Giant rabbits that are as large as dogs. His largest rabbit, Robert II won the largest rabbit for the Berlin-Brandenburg region of Germany in 2007, weighing in at approximately 24 lbs. Of course, with its insane enlargement comes a different type of fascination, a morbid curiosity—how did it get like that?

Szmolinsky’s method for growing such large rabbits is simple: he feeds them. He prepares them meals three times a day. Each meal is composed of different foods, such as grain, bio-parsley potatoes, carrots, kale, vegetables of all sorts and of course plenty of water. His rabbits live in giant cages on his homestead in Germany. Szmolinsky is very proud of his rabbits; in addition to their massive diet, he loves them, cooing, petting, and kissing them. These rabbits can produce up to fifteen pounds of meat each, though not all of the meat is edible. The liver, heart, and other such parts are typically thrown out.

One day, North Korea approached his local organization requesting to purchase some of these gigantic rabbits. The organization sent them to Szmolinsky. When the representatives saw his rabbits, they offered him a contract immediately. They told him that they wanted to breed the rabbits to help feed the starving people of North Korea. One of Szmolinsky’s rabbits could potentially feed eight people. Szmolinsky agreed, and because of their reasons, he cut the price of the rabbits from 200 to 80 euros, and sold them his eight largest rabbits, including Robert I, a personal favourite. North Korea then asked him to help them create the breeding program.

Several months later, North Korea quit all contact with Szmolinsky. They told him that they no longer needed his services. He couldn’t figure out what had happened to his rabbits. Finally, a journalist from London called with news. He had seen the rabbits at Kim Jong-Il’s birthday party, in the place of honor on the dinner table.

Szmolinsky was understandably upset. He has since, however, put his frustration behind him and the North Korea fiasco has been made into a film. In addition he has since come to an agreement with South Korea. He sold them four females and two males and has been in regular communication with them to help them with their breeding.

Szmolinsky plans to keep breeding for as long as he can. He loves his animals and his job. In the days where rabbit breeding is a dying occupation, Szmolinsky has hit the top of the charts.

The largest of the British rabbit breeds is called, aptly enough, the British Giant. The breed is characterized by its large body, flat on top, and its long erect ears and big, bright eyes. They do not have especially long fur, usually less than an inch in depth, and can be found in many colors, from bright white and opal to chocolate brown and black.

Caring for the Bigger Bunny

Although their fur is fairly short, this breed still requires regular and careful grooming and brushing, as their coats tend to mat easily. Eye color will vary from rabbit to rabbit, the white British Giant rabbit however is well known for its piercing pink eyes.

Just as the name implies, these rabbits are huge. The average British Giant buck weighs over 12.5 pounds, and does are usually even heavier. They do need a good amount of exercise, so it would be a good idea to provide them with an enclosed run for free movement and play.

Keeping Your Giant Safe and Healthy

The British Giant is normally a very sociable and playful rabbit, with a calm and gentle disposition. They do well around children, although they may not be suitable as pets for small toddlers because of their extra large size. The British Giant will quite happily play with toys and trinkets especially if they make a noise, although a responsible owner will be careful not to give them toys with tiny removable parts that they could choke on.

The ideal diet for the British Giant Rabbit is similar to that of most breeds – fresh hay, a variety of fruits and vegetables and lots of fresh water. As the British Giant will happily wander around the house, they should be kept way from houseplants, as many common varieties are quite poisonous to rabbits.

An Introduction to the Largest Rabbits on Earth

No rabbit breed is more awe inspiring than the Flemish Giant. These rabbits have been known to grow bigger than a dog. The average Flemish Giant weighs a massive fifteen pounds.
Flemish Giants became popular at the turn of the last century, when European exhibitors brought them to America to show them at county fairs around the nation. They have always been highly prized for their luxurious, soft fur, but their friendly, docile temperament makes them a popular choice of pet too.

Handle with Care

Just as with any rabbit, if you choose a Flemish Giant as a pet it will take him a little time to get used to being handled. Because they are so large their bites and scratches can be far worse than those inflicted by a smaller rabbit. They do not make good pets for small children for this reason. But if treated with care by older children and adults they do fine in a domestic setting.

A Flemish Giant can also be a good match for those looking for a calmer rabbit, one who is not dashing around all the time. Giants are usually quite happy to spend most of their time eating and lazing around. Of course, as they are so very big by nature they will consume far more food than the average rabbit breed.

If you do decide to get a Flemish Giant you will need to ensure that you buy a cage or enclosure big enough to meet his needs adequately. Although they are not great runners, the Giant does need a decent amount of space to move around in. A rabbit hutch that is 30 by 48 inches is usually considered the smallest cage that they can be housed in.

What to Look for When Choosing a Flemish Giant

Flemish Giants come in a wide variety of colors, grays both light and dark, fawn or sandy tones, black, blue and white are the most commonly seen.

As previously mentioned the average Flemish Giant generally weighs around 14 – 15.5 pounds. A few other things to look for, especially if you intend to breed or show your rabbit include:

Head: Look for a well shaped, large head. The ears should be erect, not floppy and the eyes should be bright and clear.

Body: The body should be long and powerful looking, but not fat. Healthy hindquarters will be thick and well muscled. The fur, while fairly short, should be shiny and thick.

Faults: Fat is considered a fault in show rabbits in this breed. Although they are usually a huge animal they should be well proportioned. For a show rabbit a patchy colored coat is undesirable, and floppy ears are a definite no-no.
